I actually didn't feel as though he'd abandoned Rose. He did snog Madame de Pompadour, but the Doc has kissed every. Single. One of the New companions. And, besides, ROSE WAS WITH MICKEY AND HE HAD TO PUT UP WITH THAT SORT OF THING TOO. Everyone forgets poor Mickey. As for leaving Rose on the ship, I felt more angry when he agreed to bring Madame de Pompadour and then 'popped back through the fireplace', even though he knew from experience he would come back years later. I personally think that the New series could do well with some non modern companions (I love Jack and he didn't stay nearly long enough).
